People's Comissars

One of the few common-sense libertarian voices on the media these days is former Minister Michael Falzon. Check out his refreshing article in today's Times about the Christian-Democratic tendency to create commissioners (and commissions) for everything under the sun.

Alas, a commissioner for Turkey is all we lack...for now anyway.

The man's on form - good to see.

Selah.

I assure you there's not even the slightest hint of irony in my previous statement...

I second that, Piet. Falzon is one of the very few for whom the experience of the 1970s and the 1980s is a lesson in the kind of policies we should avoid.

Someday I should email him and ask him why he doesn't blog. He's also an excellent writer, a skill which many wannabe columnists lack.

Yes, I regularly read his articles on both The Times and Malta Today and what I like most about him, apart from the fact that he's rational and entertaining, is that he actually seems to have thought seriously about issues and has a coherent political belief-system.

Glad to say I gave him my vote in the elections to the European Parliament.
